What’s an Art Gallery Party without a cake that’s a work of art? With a little planning you can make this cake like a pro.
1. Divide your cake batter into 8 different bowls. Color each bowl of batter a different color. Our colors are: red, pink, orange, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue, and purple. Bake each layer in an 8″ or 9″ round pan. You will take turns using the pan over and over with different colors. Unless you have 8 round pans. Make sure to grease and flour your pan or put a round of parchment in the bottom to prevent sticking. Let each cake cool slightly before removing. Turn out onto a cooling rack to finish cooling.
2. Once the cakes have cooled completely, freeze each layer individually wrapped in plastic. This will make it easier to assemble and frost the cake.
3. Once the cakes are frozen you can start layering your cake in a rainbow pattern, putting frosting in between each layer.
4. Frost the outside of the cake as well. More complete instructions are included in the Art Gallery Party PDF–available for purchase in our shop.

I love rainbow cakes- I can’t help but be happy every time I see one. You did a great job with this one- it looks absolutely beautiful!
Most FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful cake. I will definitely try to make this!
I’ve seen this cake all over the internet, however this one truly “takes the cake”!! So well done and the most adorable model ever! Thanks for sharing
Stacy
beautiful cake! i love how you styled the photo w/ rainbow forks as well!
Fabulous! A definite for the St.Patricks Day class party with rainbow forks and plates of course!
I love the white frosting to set the cake off. Gorgeous colors you got on this cake … did you use regular food coloring or decorator paste coloring?
We made this cake for a rainbow party! The top had a skittle and m&m rainbow but the surprise was inside.
Super cute!
Wow! What a great idea! Thanks for posting, I will definitely try this sometime.
That is brilliant.
Light blue frosting on the outside and white inside would be great for the blue sky and clouds. Of couse for an artist then actually airbrushing or decorating with icing blue skies and clouds would be even better. Thanks for the idea.
Looks almost too good to eat. Must recreate this!
In a word: pretty!
Love it!
Genius!
we love this!! what a great idea!
FABULOUS!!! I will definitely be making this cake!
Absolutely inspiring and beautiful idea!
Thanks for sharing
Regards from Tuscany

So inspirational!! I love this cake, looks delicious
One of these days I am going to have to make one of these cakes! It looks kinda difficult though so I don’t know if it will turn out too good! Oh well, I will give it a shot anyway!
Daisy~
OMG..your blog has BLOWN ME AWAY! EEEK! I *HAVE* to have a party like this…for ME! lol! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this cake and your self portrait idea! I can’t wait to plan my little one’s b’day party (in March)…TFS!
Wow, this cake is fabulous. I love this idea and I can’t wait to try it.
Ooh- thanks for sharing! A rainbow cake can sometimes look garish, but this is so elegant and whimsical! Merci!
I made something similar to this for an LGBTQ fundraiser! So not as cute, though. It was a hit! I will definitely do this for the soon launch of a non-profit LGBTQ health care center. so great!
I am in love with this cake!
cool cake!!
Great… I will sure make one… But, how do you cut it to keep it so beautifull and “straight”…
Thanks for your answer…
Valérie (from Belgium)
Valerie–Wow! Belgium! I did a post on another blog about how to cut a cake. You can see it here: http://www.martawrites.com/2010/07/how-to-cut-cake.html I’m so glad you like the rainbow cake. Merci.
Thanks… Now i can try to do it for my son’s birthday… Your blog is wonderfull…
This is such a beautiful cake! If I’m brave enough I might try this for my daughter’s upcoming birthday! For some reason PDF files are not opening on my computer
Can anyone tell me what you do after frosting the frozen layers? Thanks in advance?
Jessica–I’m so glad you got this pdf file thing figured out. Now you can make that cake!
WOW. I love this. You did an amazing job. Great craftsman ship on that! Looks perfect!
I absolutely adore this entire party–so gorgeous, bright, and cheery! Can’t wait to make the rainbow cake!
That is simply gorgeous, and the colours are perfect. I have to tell you if I was given a cake that looked like that when I was a little girl I think I would have passed out from joy and would certainly not have allowed anyone to eat it, I would have sat and looked at it for days – actually I think I would react the same way now….thanks for the post and the pictures are lovely too.
Nicole has done it again…these photos are absolutely beautiful! My friend and I made a rainbow cake for NYE with a recipe from Martha Stewart. It turned out pretty well…considering it was our first time. We’ve gotta work on our icing skills though. Hehe. And I’ve gotta work on my photography skills too. I wish my pictures would come out like Nicole’s!
I saw this for the first time on Martha Stewart (April 2010) when she interviewed the creator, Kaitlin Flannery. (http://whisk-kid.blogspot.com/) I did it last year for my four year old’s rainbow birthday party. It was a big hit! The cake and photos on this site are great. Just wished some credit was given to the original creator.
This is great! Awesome!
I made this cake today and it wasn’t hard at all – just time consuming. TOTALLY WORTH IT THOUGH. It was a hit! Thank you for your fantastic website. I recommend it to EVERYONE!
Do you use “one cake” amount for each layer?
nicole–No, it is one cake mix for 3 layers. You can buy this party in our shop for the complete cake instructions.
I have never seen such a beautiful cake! I love it!
Oh my god its amazing! I HAVE to try this, Im in love with this cake
That looks so delicious!
I have only done rainbow cupcakes, but I NEED to find a reason to make this cake. Plus I am already committed to it since I showed the pictures to my 5 year old daughter
Never heard of freezing the cake 1st, awesome idea! beautiful and your photography is impeccable.
Simply gorgeous! Can’t wait to give this a shot….I just know my grandchildren would love it)))
I juste made your cake last week for my daughter’s birthday and it has been a real success. Thanks for giving me the inspiration. I will for sure do an other one one day, trying to make it as perfect as yours but for a first trial mine was ok.
Lovely theme if this lovely party…
i love coloring
I’m jar wondering which cake is best to use, and how ling to cook each layer?
It’s beautiful, but I don’t think anyone wants to use those chemical-laden food dyes anymore. Any ideas for natural dyes? Like, beet juice for the red colour…..?
Your cake looks fun & beautiful! It would be great for any occasions and I cannot wait to try it!
Love this cake. Our daughters 3rd bday is in sept. And we are going to give her this option for sure.
Incredible rainbow cake! I’ll try to cook it for next birthday!!Thank you very much for sharing !!!
I cannot get the cake tasty. It’s a bit dry.
Does anyone know what might be the problem?
Wow, this is the prettiest rainbow cake I’ve seen. So bright and perfect! The photography is also amazing. I would love to make this but I think the Germans would revolt against all the dye. I’d still love to make it.
Wow, this looks amazing! We will definitely try to make this! Not sure if it will work though
How did you get the cake layers so even? The cakes don’t look like they have been cut. They look thinner then most cakes
Hi Bethany–I didn’t bake this cake, our baker did. But I know she measured the same amount of batter into each pan and didn’t use very much batter. They are thinner layers so that the cake doesn’t end up too tall. Hope this helps. xo
So sweet… thanks for the idea! Trackback: http://blog.joyhey.com/2012/01/17/inspiration-rainbow-party/
What kind of coloring do you put in the batter…and how much?
Hi Jessica–Use a gel food coloring (like Americolor) and you’ll need a lot of it. Judge it by the color of the batter. Hope this helps. xo
WOW That cake is beautiful…. I will definately try to make this for my daughter’s birthday coming up….love it. Thanks for sharing it
Did freezing the layers change the texture of the finished cake?
Hi Jane–No, freezing the cake layers didn’t change the texture. It still tasted yummy! xo B
I’m wanting to make this cake in a couple of weeks and have a question regarding baking time. Being that each cake is not a “full” cake size, how long would you back each round?
Hi Tina–The complete instructions are in the Art Party Plan. But yes, they aren’t baked as long as a full size cake. xo B
I made this for my grandaughter’s birthday. I iced it with mint green icing and topped it with a ruby red slipper. It was a hit!
This is great!! I think I will change up the colors and make one for Christmas! But now I finally know how. Thanks for sharing! =)
❤
❤
these are only half layers right? so how long do you cook them for?
I so appreciate that you took the time to document the process of making the cake with all those wonderful photos. I think that if I had only seen the result, I would have concluded that this was too complicated for me to attempt. But, your explanations of the process – along with the images – have given me courage to try. Thanks.
