What’s an Art Gallery Party without a cake that’s a work of art? With a little planning you can make this cake like a pro.

1. Divide your cake batter into 8 different bowls. Color each bowl of batter a different color. Our colors are: red, pink, orange, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue, and purple. Bake each layer in an 8″ or 9″ round pan. You will take turns using the pan over and over with different colors. Unless you have 8 round pans. Make sure to grease and flour your pan or put a round of parchment in the bottom to prevent sticking. Let each cake cool slightly before removing. Turn out onto a cooling rack to finish cooling.

2. Once the cakes have cooled completely, freeze each layer individually wrapped in plastic. This will make it easier to assemble and frost the cake.

3. Once the cakes are frozen you can start layering your cake in a rainbow pattern, putting frosting in between each layer.

4. Frost the outside of the cake as well. More complete instructions are included in the Art Gallery Party PDF–available for purchase in our shop.

  7. I love the white frosting to set the cake off. Gorgeous colors you got on this cake … did you use regular food coloring or decorator paste coloring?

    Julie    Tuesday, September 14, 2010
  8. We made this cake for a rainbow party! The top had a skittle and m&m rainbow but the surprise was inside.

    Super cute!

  9. Wow! What a great idea! Thanks for posting, I will definitely try this sometime.

    Anneliese    Tuesday, September 14, 2010
  10. That is brilliant.

    Joy    Tuesday, September 14, 2010
  11. Light blue frosting on the outside and white inside would be great for the blue sky and clouds. Of couse for an artist then actually airbrushing or decorating with icing blue skies and clouds would be even better. Thanks for the idea.

  12. Looks almost too good to eat. Must recreate this!

  27. Valerie–Wow! Belgium! I did a post on another blog about how to cut a cake. You can see it here: http://www.martawrites.com/2010/07/how-to-cut-cake.html I’m so glad you like the rainbow cake. Merci.

    Jessica    Friday, October 22, 2010

  32. I absolutely adore this entire party–so gorgeous, bright, and cheery! Can’t wait to make the rainbow cake!

Sweetapolita (Rosie)    Monday, November 15, 2010
  33. That is simply gorgeous, and the colours are perfect. I have to tell you if I was given a cake that looked like that when I was a little girl I think I would have passed out from joy and would certainly not have allowed anyone to eat it, I would have sat and looked at it for days – actually I think I would react the same way now….thanks for the post and the pictures are lovely too.

Patricia Shea    Thursday, December 30, 2010
  34. Nicole has done it again…these photos are absolutely beautiful! My friend and I made a rainbow cake for NYE with a recipe from Martha Stewart. It turned out pretty well…considering it was our first time. We’ve gotta work on our icing skills though. Hehe. And I’ve gotta work on my photography skills too. I wish my pictures would come out like Nicole’s!

    Cindy    Tuesday, January 4, 2011
  35. I saw this for the first time on Martha Stewart (April 2010) when she interviewed the creator, Kaitlin Flannery. (http://whisk-kid.blogspot.com/) I did it last year for my four year old’s rainbow birthday party. It was a big hit! The cake and photos on this site are great. Just wished some credit was given to the original creator.

    Jennifer    Tuesday, January 25, 2011
  36. This is great! Awesome!

    Jana    Thursday, January 27, 2011
  37. I made this cake today and it wasn’t hard at all – just time consuming. TOTALLY WORTH IT THOUGH. It was a hit! Thank you for your fantastic website. I recommend it to EVERYONE!

    Robyn    Saturday, January 29, 2011
  38. Do you use “one cake” amount for each layer?

    nicole    Tuesday, February 1, 2011
  39. nicole–No, it is one cake mix for 3 layers. You can buy this party in our shop for the complete cake instructions.

    Brittany    Tuesday, February 1, 2011
  40. I have never seen such a beautiful cake! I love it!

    Lara    Monday, June 27, 2011
  49. It’s beautiful, but I don’t think anyone wants to use those chemical-laden food dyes anymore. Any ideas for natural dyes? Like, beet juice for the red colour…..?

  50. Your cake looks fun & beautiful! It would be great for any occasions and I cannot wait to try it!

  53. I cannot get the cake tasty. It’s a bit dry.
Does anyone know what might be the problem?

    Lyanne    Wednesday, September 14, 2011
  54. Wow, this is the prettiest rainbow cake I’ve seen. So bright and perfect! The photography is also amazing. I would love to make this but I think the Germans would revolt against all the dye. I’d still love to make it. :)

  55. Wow, this looks amazing! We will definitely try to make this! Not sure if it will work though :)

  56. How did you get the cake layers so even? The cakes don’t look like they have been cut. They look thinner then most cakes

    Bethany    Wednesday, December 14, 2011
  57. Hi Bethany–I didn’t bake this cake, our baker did. But I know she measured the same amount of batter into each pan and didn’t use very much batter. They are thinner layers so that the cake doesn’t end up too tall. Hope this helps. xo

    Brittany    Thursday, December 15, 2011

  59. What kind of coloring do you put in the batter…and how much?

    Jessica    Tuesday, February 21, 2012
  60. Hi Jessica–Use a gel food coloring (like Americolor) and you’ll need a lot of it. Judge it by the color of the batter. Hope this helps. xo

    Brittany    Tuesday, February 21, 2012
  61. WOW That cake is beautiful…. I will definately try to make this for my daughter’s birthday coming up….love it. Thanks for sharing it

    Nancy    Monday, February 27, 2012
  62. Did freezing the layers change the texture of the finished cake?

    Jane    Thursday, October 4, 2012
  63. Hi Jane–No, freezing the cake layers didn’t change the texture. It still tasted yummy! xo B

    Brittany    Thursday, October 4, 2012
  64. I’m wanting to make this cake in a couple of weeks and have a question regarding baking time. Being that each cake is not a “full” cake size, how long would you back each round?

    Tina    Sunday, October 7, 2012
  65. Hi Tina–The complete instructions are in the Art Party Plan. But yes, they aren’t baked as long as a full size cake. xo B

    sharry    Friday, March 22, 2013
  71. I so appreciate that you took the time to document the process of making the cake with all those wonderful photos. I think that if I had only seen the result, I would have concluded that this was too complicated for me to attempt. But, your explanations of the process – along with the images – have given me courage to try. Thanks.

מאור ברגר    Monday, July 1, 2013
  73. This is gorgeous! Makes my non-baker self really want to bake my son’s birthday cake. He wants Wreck-it-Ralph theme, but I hate to go all Disney on it. I think this could coordinate beautifully! XO

Amanda Bruyere    Friday, October 18, 2013
  74. You forgot to mention that you have to LEVEL every layer or you’ll end up with a giant hump cake of yummyness, but that won’t look this nice. I kept trying to make cakes for a few years and couldn’t figure out why they would always turn into a giant humpy mess. NONE of the blogs I read every explained this or added this step in their “simple” tutorials. It’s setting up the readers to fail and that feels really unfair. Is there some secret thing that bakers are doing to make every cake come out with the same thinkness straight out of the oven that I don’t know about?

    Rose    Tuesday, October 29, 2013
  75. Absolutely LOVE this cake. Wow, your rainbow cake is definitely the most beautiful of all I’ve seen. Thank you for posting it as I decided to make it for my daughter’s rainbow 5th birthday party!

I only wish I had known that it required TWO cake batters, not one:( I spent hours baking it today and realize I will have to redo it tomorrow night! It’s too cute not to do again. But other novice cake bakers like myself might find it helpful if you were to make the tiny edit to your directions to bake two cake batters.

    Thanks again!

allison coburn    Friday, January 24, 2014
  76. Would you mind posting the cake recipe? Below is the one I used and the layers were too thin. I am planning to redo the cake tomorrow night and want to make sure I get it right the second time around! THANKS!
    Vegetable shortening
    3 cups all-purpose flour
    4 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature
    2 1/3 cups sugar
5 large egg whites, room temperature
    2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups milk, room temperature
