Sara and I both love magazines. And we definitely have stacks of mags that we will never throw away. For this giveaway we’re hoping to add a few of our must haves to your collection. As you know we recently met Martha Stewart. She was so sweet and signed a few copies of her latest issue of Living for us. We also love her Holiday Cookies issue that only comes out once a year. And we are so excited to throw in the amazing new Holiday with Matthew Mead magazine. This magazine is only available via his website. One lucky winner will win all three magazines. And I might throw in an extra little Christmas gift. But only if you’re on the nice list. Leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite gift you’ve ever GIVEN and I’ll pick a winner and announce it next week. (If you are reading this on Facebook, please click over to the blog to enter and comment as I will be randomly selecting the winner there.)

Thanks everyone and have a great weekend.

  1. My husband turned 50 this year. He has always wanted to sky drive. ‘Are you kidding me” I would always reply. This year I found an indoor skydiving center about 80 miles from our home. I told him that I signed him up for a special one-on-one golf lessons. He brought his clubs & I programed the GPS.
It was a fantastic surprise when we arrived at the flight center.

  2. The most favourite gift I’ve given would be a book, but a very special book. When my husband and his brother were young, thier Dad wrote a book called ‘A Holiday Mystery’ for them to read in the school holidays. It was poorly typed (spelling and grammar errors) and printed on plain white A4 paper.

He passed away 5 years ago now, and I gave this special gift 2 years after his passing.

I spent 2 months editing it into a nice paperback size, fixing grammar and spelling and had it professionally printed as a ‘real’ book, one copy for each of them.

They both loved it and even cried (as did I!).

  3. My favorite gift ever was a dollhouse that my mother assembled in secrecy for a month before December. A simple kit, with only a few pieces of furniture (also built by her)… and I’m certain it started off my passion for making our house a home! I received the dollhouse about thirty-two years ago… what a wonderful Christmas memory!

  4. Ooh love Christmassy magazines! I think my favourite gift ever given hasn’t been given yet – I’ve made fabric advent calendars for my sisters and their little ones this year. I’ve been planning them for years, and this year I finally got round to it. I finished them off this week and am so excited to give them something they can use year after year.

  5. I would LOVE these!! My favorite gift that I have ever given was for my mother. My parents divoriced when I was young and ever dollar that my mom made was for us. She NEVER bought herself a thing. When I was 22 and finally had a decent job I saved up my money and for my mom’s birthday surprised her with a Disney vacation. Most kids go with their parents when they are little, well, I didn’t get that chance. We spent 3 days at Disney and 4 days in Ft. Lauderdale. It was her first “Real” vacation and we had the best time!

  6. My beautiful children–such a gift!

  7. A few years back my aunt was moving and she was finally going to live alone. She was so excited but had LR furniture that was about 20 years old. I bought her a beautiful sofa – actually I bought a used sofa from a friend and had it reupholstered. (Sadly (for me), she ended up putting plastic on it – drives me insane!!!)

  8. Goodness it must be 11 years ago when I bought my dad a Captain Midnight decoder ring from ebay. It was his favorite show growing up.

  9. The best gift I have ever given was the year my fifth grade class and I decide to fulfill the Christmas wish list of a lady who worked in our cafeteria. She had fallen on real hard times and was really upset about not being able to buy Santa’s gifts for her two children. Each one of my twenty-six students bought an item from the kids’ list and a few sweet children approached me about getting her a Christmas tree so her family could have a real celebration on Christmas morning! I still remember it like yesterday, my entire class walked over to the lunchroom with gifts in hand and a real tree for her and her family to decorate! We just felt so happy and I loved to watch how each of my students reacted! It was the year that most of those ten year olds learned the true meaning of the holidays! Thankfully I was lucky enough to experience it too!

  10. What a great giveaway- I have a huge soft spot for magazines especially Martha Stewarts.
The best present I ever gave was to my niece on her one year old birthday. I had yet to meet her as I was 3000 miles away on a different continent but had saved all the pictures her mom and dad sent me. So I made her a photo book with a poem I had written inside titled “Even though I have not met you…” finishing with “even though I have not met you…I truly, deeply, love you”. I wasn’t there when her mother opened it but apparently there was many tears all round. I always think a gift is perfect if it evokes an emotion like that- it makes it so meaningful.

  11. My favorite Christmas gift was the birth of my son on December 22nd. What a blessing he is to us!

    Isabel Z    Friday, December 10, 2010
  12. A Playhouse!
My children had a teeny tiny house that was so pathetic that they even tried to add a 2nd floor into it, my son had my daughter laying on plywood stacked on bricks -** AND THEN** Christmas Eve, in 3 feet of snow, Santa plopped a 2 story playhouse with electric and heat right into our yard! Santa had to do an awful lot of shoveling to get it in place- but Christmas morning, it was decorated with a tree and we will never forget the faces!!

    Merry Christmas to you!

  13. Three years ago I made scrapbook sytle cookbooks for my three daughters. I asked all family members and friends to give me their “special” recipes they take to Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th of July parties, etc. I then focused each Holiday around all these friends and family members. So in years to come, when my daughters and their families are sitting around the Holiday table and they’re discussing great grandma’s wonderful yeast rolls, they’ll have the recipe. No more of that “Oh, I wish someone would have written that recipe down, or I wish someone would have thought to ask so so for that recipe”. I also made the scrapbooks to reflect each daughter’s personality. So much fun to make and when they opened them, they were so stunned and surprised. All that work was worth the time and energy. It’s also something you can keep adding too.

  14. I love magazines too! Living is always inspiring and I miss my subscription.

The favorite Christmas gift I have given is a cross-stitch angel that I made for my mother. It took me the whole year prior to finish it, but it was worth it because she was so surprised and she loved it.

  15. first let me start by telling you every day after my tea… I go and read your blog…I am having a gingerbread party.. because you inspired me.
I went grocery shopping with my hubby and he told me NO magazines.. and I just wanted the Martha Stewart where she celebrates the years…. oh, well..
My favorite gift I gave someone was…When I sold an expensive ring… to buy my boyfriend at the time a Movado watch.. and he sold.. his leather jacket to buy me…a ring…it’ was much like the gift of the maji.
have a great holiday and thanks for hosting such a great swap idea.

  16. When I found out I was pregnant with a surprise baby number 3, my husband and I wanted a unique way to let everyone know. We had a picture of our boys taken holding a sign that said “Dear Santa: Please bring us a baby brother or sister in July”. We then had the photos placed in Merry Christmas photo pillows. Our parents, sisters and brothers and aunts were given these gifts to open and boy were they surprised! These were definitely the best gifts ever given.

  17. Every year I have a hard time finding something for my husband…not sure why, but a few years back I surpised him with a Kayak…he had been wanting and he said it was the best Christmas gifg ever. He does so much for everyone else I was so happy to give him something he really wanted.

  19. Love all your posts….please keep them coming.
I remember always hearing give something you would also like to get..great advice. My happiest gift was for a 50th wedding anniversary/Christmas gift. Spray painted “gold” basket filled with 50 “gold” gifts. “Golden Grahams” cereal”, “Gold Bond” powder, “Gold Toe” socks…..etc, etc.

  20. I have a daughter that was born on December 24th and she has been an awesome gift to our family!

  21. A couple of years after I got married I found a wonderful idea in one of my favorite magazines…Martha Stewart Living (love her!!!!!!) I found wedding pictures of my husband’s parents and each of their parents. I also found pictures of my parents and their parents on their own wedding days. I then copied them and put them in beautiful frames. I gave each set to my sister, brother, dad, and in- laws. They were speechless! It was so special to see such an amazing day for each couple. It was also fun to see the clothes they wore. My maternal grandparents got married before WW II so they have on Sunday clothes instead of the fancy bridal gown. What made it even more sentimental was that my mom passed away the year before so to see my dad’s face when he opened it was priceless! I have all of the pictures mounted on our wall and I love looking at them each day!

    Tiffany    Friday, December 10, 2010
  22. Oh how I love Martha!
Every year I put together a photo yearbook of my kids. I love to see the grandparents’ faces when they look back over the year. The have a nice little library all about my children that they love to share with their friends. Oh- and I always print a copy for the kids too. They’ll appreciate having their lives chronicled in photos someday!

  23. This is going to sound silly, but Sock Garters. My fiancé is a very traditional type of guy. His black belts can only have brass buckles, he prefers casual suits to tee shirts and jeans, and he only likes a certain type of black socks. The problem is that they do not make those socks anymore and his are starting to wear out. Half of his socks have started to loose the elastic and do not stay up on their own anymore. So sock garters were very well received. Not only do they appeal to his sense of vintage fashion, they also have made is favorite socks wearable again! Win win!

  24. My father in law went on a once in a life time hiking trip up Kilamanjaro in Africa. I got my mil to sneak me all his pictures and memorabilia and I made a scrapbook of it for him . . . complete with inside jokes from his buddies.

It took hours and days . . . but in the end it turend out fabulous. And for a man who has everything and is so hard to shop for, it brought a tear to his eye.

  27. my fav gift I gave was to my husband. His office had no windows and always seemed so sad. So I made a cork photo wall and put pics of our kids and post cards of places we have been and imporant dates in our lives. He opened it and started to cry he was sooooo happy. Now every few years I go to his office a steal it back to refresh it and regift it to him on christmas:)

  28. This year I got my mom serving spoons and she went nuts! I know it sounds a little lame, but she never buys anything for herself and typically all of us kids go in together to buy my mom and dad a joint gift – which she appreciates, but usually it’s not very practical or personal. Getting something for “just her” and that she has been needing was a real treat. The spoons were something she’s been needing for a long time, but she always made do without. I’m glad I could give her something so simple that made her feel so special!

  29. My favorite gift is a book given to my dad. I enlisted 50 people comprised of family, friends and co-workers. I sent them a page for them to put a picture of a memory they had with my dad along with a paragraph explaining the picture. It was so worth the effort. My dad is now gone but we have those memories. many we probably would not know had it not been for the book.

    Laura    Friday, December 10, 2010
  30. I got my mom an ipod. She was still using a CD player (!) up until about two years ago. She never buys new toys for herself, and I thought she was due for an upgrade. It was one of the first things I bought with my first real adult-job paycheck.

    Elyse    Friday, December 10, 2010
  31. My favorite gift and still is, my hubbie. :)

    Renee F.    Friday, December 10, 2010
  32. My favorite gift I’ve given was a signed copy of Tom Brokah’s “The Greatest Generation” to my dad, who served in WWII. I felt like it was my way of showing him that I understood and was proud of who he really was a a person. Unfortunately he passed away 6 months later, but I was so glad he knew how I felt!

    Laura    Friday, December 10, 2010
  33. My younger sister loves to cook. She’s always wanted a stand mixer but couldn’t justify the cost of getting one. This year, I got her the Kitchen Aid mixer. The look on her face will be priceless! It’s always nice to give a gift you know the other party really wants.

    Angela C    Friday, December 10, 2010
  34. Diamond earrings for my mom. They were WAY out of my budget (after just graduating from college), but moms deserve something special when you finally realize that they are worth their weight in diamonds!

  35. I think that the best gift I’ve given has to be last year’s gift to my 15-year old daughter. She was (and I think is still) crazy about the Twilight series/movies. I found a lifesize cardboard cutout of Taylor Lautner on-line and bought it for her. On Christmas Eve I carefully placed Taylor (6′ feet tall in jeans and black t-shirt) slightly behind the Christmas tree. On Christmas morning, my husband got up first. My oldest golden retriever was sitting in the family room staring at the tree ~~ not barking, just staring. My husband thought she wanted the treats from her stocking, so he proceeded to get them for her. He nearly had a heart attack when he saw Taylor!!! Mind you, I had never told him about the Taylor Lautner purchase! My daughter was ecstatic when she saw Taylor! We have had more fun with that cutout than with any other gift in a very long time. My daughter has scared all of her friends with it, and there are several facebook pictures of my daughter and her friends “with Taylor”. We even took him on our vacation this summer. We folded him in half, packed him in the car, and took him to the beach! We were vacationing with my family, and they were quite surprised when they arrived at our beach house and saw Taylor in the kitchen!! He spent a lot of time on the deck overlooking the ocean for all of the vacationers to “wave” to. This story may sound a bit creepy, but he really has been a lot of fun. I’m not sure I can top that gift this year, and, too, my daughter is now crushing on Chace Crawford, and he does NOT have a lifesize cardboard cutout!!! Happy Holidays!

  36. My favorite gift I ever gave was a scrap book I made for my grandmother about her life and family. I would sit for hours and talk to her and ask oodles of questions about herself and her life and found some really great old photos. I gave it to her on her 89 birthday. She was beyond happy and so glad to know that her children and grandchildren will have that to always remember her and know who she was and there family history.

    Sarah M.    Friday, December 10, 2010
  39. After my grandfather passed away we were going thru all his boxes of stuff. I found tons of pics of my dad as a kid, so I made my dad a scrapbook of his life- from his birth announcement all the way thru college. He loved it and he had no idea his dad had kept all those mementos. I think it showed him how much his father ( and me!) cared about him.

    Cindy    Friday, December 10, 2010
  40. MY faborite gift given and the most fun was actually for my husbands birthday a few years ago. I rented his favorite sports car, packed a wine and cheese picnic and picked him up from work. It was awesome to “speed up” up to his office front door where he was standing. He thought I bought it…I wish. But we spent the day racing through the mountains in Santa Cruz, went to a lovely fondue dinner and more driving with the top down and heat seaters on…it was a wonderful day that we still relive when we chat about ot often…..

  42. My favorite gift was the purchase of three bagpipes for my children. After three years of lessons and playing, they perform beautifully and are able to bless others’ lives through their talent. Amazing Grace on the bagpipes is — truly amazing!

    Kelly    Friday, December 10, 2010
  43. The best gift I have given would be the personalized ornament I gave my sister in law last year. I had it hand painted with a picture of their new home–their first home, with the address. This is something that will be treasured for years to come! Plus, watching her open it was also a great gift to me!

  46. My favorite gift that I’ve ever given is an old black and white photo My husband and I visited the historic train station in our town and they had a photo of the same station at the turn of the century up on the wall that he fell in love with. Many weeks and several trips to the Historical Society later, I located the negative of the original and had a print made. He was shocked and touched and I was so happy to have found it.

    Kathryn    Friday, December 10, 2010
  47. A journal given to my dad 5 or so years before he died has proven to be the best gift I ever gave.

My friend and co-worker had to put her dog to
Sleep just before the holidays. I ordered a really

Dog. She absolutely loved it and started to cry.

  51. I love Christmas and I love magazines! This is perfect. The best gift I’ve ever given was to my mom and stepdad – we have so many inside jokes in our family, so my sister and I compiled a list and made a photo book with all the jokes listed. It’s something that we’ll all remember for a long time.

avon asawapornsnit    Friday, December 10, 2010
  54. Last year I gave a cookbook I made with a collection of my favorite recipes. I had done it on blurb and put in pics of my family as well as little stories about each recipe. My family loved it so much that extended family member requested it for this year too.

    Nikki    Friday, December 10, 2010
  55. My favorite gift is still a work-in-progress: I make Christmas tree ornaments each year (sometimes elaborate, sometimes not!). I’m collecting the ones from each year of my niece and nephew’s lives, and will give them to them when they are 18 or 20.

    Ann B    Friday, December 10, 2010

  57. The best gifts I’ve ever given have been to fulfill the wishes of children who otherwise wouldn’t receive a gift (picking a name/wish from a tree situation.) Exceeding their wildest dreams is the best.

    Porche    Friday, December 10, 2010

I’m excited to see his face when he opens everything! :)

  60. My favorite gift I’ve ever given was a recipe book that I created for my grandma. I had every family member send me their favorite recipe, memory of grandma and a picture(s) and then I built it online. The best part was watching her open it & seeing the tears of joy.

    Thank you!

Lisa @ With Style & Grace    Friday, December 10, 2010
  61. I made I spy quilts for my boys a few years back, and they still love them. In fact, my three year old sleeps with his every night. I love hand made gifts.

  62. I also have stacks of Martha. Anyway favorite gift given, hhhmmmmmm. . . . . I don’t know that I can name a specific but my favorite gifts to give are those to my husband that are a complete surprise (and are exactly what he wanted).

    Tiffany    Friday, December 10, 2010
  63. My favorite given gift is the gift of TIME. We do this for sibling gifts for my children. For example: the oldest might give their younger siblings a gift of an afternoon at the park with a highlight of a 30 minute swing ride, etc….

    Laura    Friday, December 10, 2010
  64. i got my sister adorable bird plates and an apron from etsy as a wedding gift. her new last name is robbins, so her life is bird themed!

i love Martha Stewart so much! i am asking for a subscription to Martha Stewart Living for Christmas!

    caitlin    Friday, December 10, 2010
  65. My favorite gift was buying my boyfriend (future husband) an Xbox 360 for many reasons. One, he never asked for it and was actually saving to buy one himself. Two, I coordinated with his family so they got him the games he wanted as well. Three, the look on his face reminded me of a child on Christmas day. After the age of 10, there are fewer and fewer moments of child-like surprise and joy so to give that to someone else was the best gift I’ve ever given.

    Stephanie    Friday, December 10, 2010
  66. OMG.. what an awesome giveaway.. I’ve already started baking Christmas cookies from the Holiday Cookies mag. I absolutely love all the ideas from MS magazines, wish I had enough time to do it all! The best Christmas gift I’ve ever give? That’s a hard one because I’m so bad at giving gifts… probably the one this year to my BFF… soup and sandwich plate from Uncommon Goods with homemade roasted tomato soup (and cookies of course)!

    Tran    Friday, December 10, 2010
  67. Last year, I gave my husband a vintage Atari, complete with 25 different games (most of them were the “good” ones.) Their family couldn’t afford one when he was a child, and he’d always been envious of all his friends who spent most of their after school time playing Donkey Kong or PacMan. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen my husband so excited about a gift. Ever. :)

Jenny Joy    Friday, December 10, 2010
  68. There are so many beautiful gifts that have been given by those that have already posted! That alone is fun on top of getting a chance for some great magazines! My best gift given- scrapbook calendars I make for my Mom and mother-in-law every year which they love! I also do 12 days of Christmas for my husband every year which he secretly anticipates with joy!

    Jolie    Friday, December 10, 2010
  69. I can’t pinpoint one gift but each year I give handmade gifts to friends and my kids – personalized ceramic plates, aprons, softies, dresses. I can’t wait for my kids to find their gifts under the tree this year!

    Whitney    Friday, December 10, 2010
  70. The best gift I’ve ever given was giving the kindle to my sister for her birthday. A few of us pitched to give it to her for the following reasons since she lives in New York and the kindle is compact and allows her to read anywhere and of course doesn’t create clutter in her tiny NY apartment.

    Nicole Y.    Friday, December 10, 2010
  71. My favorite gift is my cats. My parents gave them to me and I have loved watching them grow to be such beautiful pets.

    Brianne    Friday, December 10, 2010
  72. When I was a very young teenager, I went to the mall and bought my grandpa a very nice winter coat. My grandparents were by no means wealthy and I could never remember him wearing a big thick coat. I was so proud of that gift!

    Mollie    Friday, December 10, 2010
  73. Last year for christmas I made each of my sisters aprons. What was so special was that they were made from my grandma’s vintage crocheted pillowcases. They loved them and I loved giving them. I couldn’t wait to see them open them.

    Harmony    Friday, December 10, 2010
  74. I love to give gifts with a theme, for example kitchen. Since the holidays always visit the kitchen, I like to give tea towels, hand soap, lotions, …

    Tamrah T.    Friday, December 10, 2010
  75. I’d have to say when I was younger I would make THE best cookies for my family members (before I was old enough for a job) and wrap them up pretty and give those as gifts. It was a much simpler time!

    Chelsea A    Friday, December 10, 2010
  76. I am an identical twin. We have tried very hard to AlWAYS spend our birthday together. One year however, she had to be in Poland for work over our birthday. I decided that I would mail to her a few of her favorite foods that she could share on our birthday. They were silly little things. I even taped a candle to the box of Little Debbie brownies with a note to light the candle, call me and we would sing Happy Birthday to one another as we have done since we were children. She was thrilled!!

  77. The favorite gift I’ve ever given would probably be a handmade journal I gave to my younger brother-in-law. It was a big project, and I’d never made one before. I love giving a handmade gift, espeically when it’s one I never would have thought I’d be able to make. I’ve made several journals as gifts since then.

  80. We live in Maine and my father and husband are BIG Red Sox fans. One year I was able to give my dad, husband, step-son and father-in-law all a train ride to Boston and tickets to a Sox game. What a great guy’s day out and special treat it was for all of them!

  81. There are so many to choose from… However, my favorite gift that I have ever given would have to be a giant plastic dinosaur, to my daughter. This thing was bigger than she was but she lugged it around every where with her and she still plays with it, she is almost 11 yrs old but she will always be in love with her dinosaur. She painted the toe nails sparkly pink. She has always said she wants to be a paleontologist, I know she is just practicing!

  82. I made life size dolls for my daughters for Christmas one year. That looked like them and personalized them with a few things. They were a lot of work but they still make me smile when I look at them or when the girls are playing with them.

  84. The best gift ever is this year we are back together as a family! My husband was activated from Reserve Duty and stationed in Southern Texas. He left 4 days after our baby was born. When my baby was 6 weeks old we packed up and moved to my Parents house to tend to my Mother in stage 4 cancer. After a long hard summer sepparated from my husband, and seeing my mother pass away, we are now back together as a family in time for the holidays. We are in a new house all together. It won’t be a huge christmas, but To be together after so long is huge to us. The love and support of family united together is priceless.

  85. Okay, so this is kind of a long story. When I was 14, my mom somehow got tickets to see Les Miserables at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City. She knew I was obsessed with the musical, and so although she had never seen it before, she gave her ticket to me. Ahh! It kind of makes me tear up to think about it. It was a big deal. So, three years later, Les Mis came back, and I was determined to get my mom a ticket. We didn’t have internet at the time, and I didn’t have a credit card, and the tickets were selling like crazy, so it was kind of a big production to get them. I had to borrow my grandma’s credit card with promises to pay her back, and then I had to go to my best friend’s house at like 5:30 in the morning to order them online. The show was in January or February, and I bought the tickets in August, so I had to keep them a secret for like 5 months. Seeing her face when she opened that envelope on Christmas morning was 100% worth it. Best Christmas, ever.

    Kiersten    Friday, December 10, 2010
  86. When I was in college I arranged to re-record several songs that I had performed in church. They weren’t recorded originally and that disappointed my Dad. On Christmas morning I put the cassette tape in his stocking. It made him cry. So that was really special. I had no idea that it would have meant so much to him.

  87. The best gift I ever gave was my time..1 year I volunteer my time to help the Katrina victim (serving hot meal, passing out care package etc) even though my house was damage in Katrina felt so good. That was Christmas 2005 ;)
That was the best Christmas ever

Felicia Nguyen    Friday, December 10, 2010
  88. The Christmas before my Grandpa passed away I transcribed a personal history he had tape recorded for his posterity twenty years ago. It was made into a booklet with a CD version of the old tape cassette recordings included so you can read along as you listen to him ‘tell’ you his history in his own voice. A copy was to be given to each of his children and grandchildren. When I gave it to him he burst out crying, then I burst out crying, then the whole room burst out crying! I think he knew his testimony and his history were the only things of real worth that he could leave his family and he was right. I’m happy I found a way to help him do it.

  89. My favourite gift ever given was actually a collaboration by many people in my family. It was a Life magazine for my grandmothers 80th birthday. Different family members wrote articles on her. We contacted her sisters and childhood friends for stories of her childhood. All seven of her children and 22 of her grandchildren were a part of putting it together. She poured over it when she received it!

  92. When I was growing up, I heard an idea to write letters to your future husband, not yet knowing who he would be. I started around the age of 14 and wrote to him up until our wedding day. At first it was addressed to “my future husband” and later I started addressing them to my fiance. I was filled with so much anticipation on our wedding day, in part to give my hubby-to-be his letters. He loved them.

    Amanda L    Friday, December 10, 2010
  93. My favorite gift that I’ve ever given has been given each year since my kids were born. Every year on Christmas Eve, after the kids are asleep, my wife and & set up their toys and presents from Santa underneath the tree. Seeing their faces as they discover the magic of Santa on Christmas morning is just amazing. I don’t have the words to describe the feeling. I guess it’s just magical!

    Kimberly    Friday, December 10, 2010

  96. I love giving gifts for Christmas, birthdays, or any old reason! The best gift I have ever given was my old teddy bear to my mom when I moved away to college. I put a long note on it that basically said that just because I am away from home, does not make me ‘grown.’ And I will always, always need my mom, just like when I was young.

    Valerie    Friday, December 10, 2010
  97. The best gift I’ve given I think was earrings I had ordered from Australia for my sister, who lived there for a while and missed it so much.

    Staci A    Friday, December 10, 2010
  99. Well, it’s got to be either the suprise Gilmore Girls birthday slumber-party I planned for my best friend’s 18th birthday, or the giant hand-made board game I invented for her 17th birthday (yeah, she’s one lucky girl). We had so much fun!

Victoria Raigo    Friday, December 10, 2010

  102. Love this giveaway! The greatest gift I have ever given would have to be the 12 X 16 cross stich I made for my grandparents a few years ago. It took me over a year to make but it was so worth it, it is so them and I loved every moment that I put into it.

    Terri    Friday, December 10, 2010

  109. my MIL had a bear on her bed that was made by her neighbor out of her late husband’s cordoroy pants (he died suddenly in a car accident). One of the eyes had fallen off and as I was helping her clean out her closet I found one of his plaid shirts. That Christmas I snuck them both out of her house and made a shirt for the bear out of HIS old shirt and replaced the button eye. It was a really touching moment when she opened her gift…we both cried and it made me so happy to bring her comfort in that small way.

When we went downtown ot watch the Christmas parade I looked in the window only to be heartbroken that MY Chrystal was gone…I was devastated. Little did I know that Santa would be bringing her to me soon! I still have that babydoll and I will be 35 years old soon :)

  118. I will do a super dorky happy dance if I win these!!! Eee!

There are a few gifts I would definitely consider my favorite ever given, but I only have time to post about one at the moment – we have a newborn here! For my little twin sisters’ birthday the year before I got married, I took them both to Disneyland (totally surprised them that morning with tickets). We had such a wonderful time together. After we got home, I made little scrap books for each of them of our time together (from breakfast at home to bringing them home asleep in the back of my car). It was awesome sister time, and I’m very happy to say that we’ve had a lot more of it even after I have been married now almost 11 years ;)

  120. Wow just one….hmmm. I think it had to be when I gave my husband our first Christmas tree ornament with our “family” members names on it; mine, my husband’s and our dogs. It actually started a tradition! We have one now for every year and we’ve added new family members names. We smile every year we put up the tree. The girft seems to keep giving.

    Julie    Friday, December 10, 2010
  121. I would have to say when I gave my husband tickets to see his alma mater play football. This year funds are low so I’m baking most gifts and spending time with the people I love.

  122. Last year my husband and I didn’t exchange gifts, but gave microloans to women in other countries. Nice to know that the gift keeps on giving!

    Leah    Friday, December 10, 2010
  123. A few years ago I bought my husband (we were engaged at the time) a Greek-help book for one of his classes. It cost over $150 and was not something he would ever purchase for himself because of the price. Money is tight this year, and we’ve been picking out things to sell for a little extra cash. That book would bring in a pretty penny, but he said he still uses it all the time and wouldn’t consider selling it. So glad I splurged!

    Meredith    Friday, December 10, 2010

  126. Last year I gave my parents a fully stocked 72 kit in a cool rolling backpack. I was so excited to give it to them because I thought it was clever and USEFULL. At their age, they don’t need another knick-knack to dust and they already have everything they want.

    Shelley    Friday, December 10, 2010
  127. I don’t really sew, but was inspired by some cute monster fabric I saw at the craft store, so for my nephew’s 1st birthday I made him a baby quilt. My sister loves it and so does my nephew, and I’m proud of how my little sewing experiment turned out.

    Anna    Friday, December 10, 2010
  128. My brother was killed three years ago in a horrible car accident. Last year for my birthday my husband found a bunch of old pictures of my brother and I of when we were young and put them in a frame. It was definitely the most meaningful gift I have ever received.

I had been bed ridden for four months after an accident and they took care of me the whole time ( I was an adult but single) I gave them the trip for Christmas and the trip coincided with their 30th wedding anniversary. They had a wonderful time!

  131. My baby’s first Chrismas we figured he didn’t really need any presents so we donated money in my son’s name to a charity which performs hole-in-the-heart operations for needy children. That year, above all others, I really felt the true meaning of Christmas in our little house!

Just the two of us went out to his favorite restaurant where I gave him his gift with our plane tickets that left in a few hours. 139. My husband and I lived apart for 4 years due to his job. Last year for Christmas (we had not had Christmas together in 4 years) I arranged for him to fly home to be with the family. That 2 days together was the best gift ever!

    Elizabeth    Friday, December 10, 2010
  140. Growing up I kept a journal to give to my future husband someday. I wrote tales of my happenings, memories, and prayers for him. As I wrote the journal, I always wondered where he was in that moment in time. My husband grew up in Oklahoma and I grew up in Northern California. After we both graduated college states away, he was sent on a job project to my hometown in California. We met in church, I sat down right next to him, blushed, and the rest is history. I gave him that journal on our wedding day. We live happily in Colorado Springs and are working on a full house.

Jenny Bender    Friday, December 10, 2010

    jan    Friday, December 10, 2010
  146. The best gift I have ever given was a dozen “butterhorns”. It’s a pastry made from an old German recipe passed down many generations. My brother loves them but his wife had never made them. So I bake a bunch to share with him. (They weren’t quite as good as my mother’s though…)

    Carol    Friday, December 10, 2010

Melissa Sauls    Friday, December 10, 2010
  148. Giving gifts is so much fun, especially the part of seeing their facial expression when they realize what it is. One of the best gifts that I’ve given was just last year. My husband has talked and talked about sailing for years. As much as he has talked about it you would think that he had been sailing for years, however he’d never been a day in his life. We are finally living in a city where the option for sailing exists. So, along came the greatest gift; that of sailing. It was just a short jaunt out on the sail boat, but he was like a little kid the night before Christmas the night before we went out. Was so great seeing him that happy. Love it.

Thanks for the chance at these great magazines!

    Danae    Friday, December 10, 2010
  149. The best thing I ever gave wasn’t a gift- it was a birthday party. My fiance had never had a birthday party before and gifts weren’t given a lot in his house as a kid due to having 5 children and not much in the monetary sense. (Love was always abundant :) ) But he had never had a birthday party. We were living in Maine at the time and I rented a kids camp that was closed for the season (it was Labor Day weekend) and I invited all of his friends he hadn’t seen in years. It was a surprise and I had everyone dress for where they would go on vacation and sent out postcards as the invites. Every place had it’s own “station” at the party, with food that matched its locale and music. Then I sent him letters for the weeks leading up to it like he had won a trip somewhere. On the day of the party I set up a scavenger hunt around town and each place he got an article of clothing that represented his “vacation”. When he got to the empty camp he looked so confused- then his friends all jumped out- he was so surprised and excited. He said it was on that day that he realized he wanted to marry me, as no one had ever tried so hard to make his birthday special. He proposed 3 months later :)

    Whitney S    Friday, December 10, 2010
  150. Every year we buy presents for incarcerated parents to give their children as part of a ministry at our church. One year a little 4-year-old girl wanted a sleeping bag. I found a beautiful pink one with butterflies and had it embroidered with her name. I like to think that it made her feel special since the present was clearly just for her from her dad.

    Jennifer    Friday, December 10, 2010
  151. The best gift I ever gave was to my mother-in-law. My husband has 6 siblings (almost all are married ). I personalized a Christmas bulb for each family member with their name and picture of their hobby, interest or occupation. As the family grows I make a new ornament. Pretty soon, nothing but bulbs are going to cover the tree! :)

    Dana    Friday, December 10, 2010
  155. My favorite gift that I ever gave were leather bound journals to my parents. I asked them to write their life stories and experiences in them so that one day I had something to remember them by, long after they were gone. I love that I can pass them down from generation to generation! So far both of my parents have done a great job at documenting some amazing experiences and I will treasure that gift that will ultimately give back for many years to come!

    Amy    Friday, December 10, 2010

  160. My favorite gifts given have been the ones that I get for the people I pick off the “Santa for a Senior” tree. This program is similar to the Angel Tree they do for kids, but it is for the elderly in our community. They always ask for such simple things like sweat pants, scrubbing bubbles cleaner, electric blankets, etc. I just really enjoy getting those small things that mean so much them.

She is 29 now and tells everyone about it to this day, that it was the best gift she ever received. As a woman you can tell how great it was in so many ways. :o)

  166. Oh I would love to win these gorgeous mags!

My favorite gift I’ve ever given was a calendar I put together along with my two sisters, for my parents. All three of us daughters wrote thank you notes on many of the days, thanking my parents for the special things they did for us through the years. We wrote things like “thank you for paying for piano lessons for all those years”, “thank you for teaching us how to make pie crust from scratch”… lots of the big and little things my parents did for us.

  169. It’s a little thing, but I think my favorite gift I ever gave was a note to my younger brother. He’s two years younger than me and we’ve always been close and have shared countless funny memories and jokes. For his 21st birthday, I wrote him a list of 21 things I love about him. Even though he’s not one to show a lot of emotion, I could tell he felt loved reading about all the things that I think make him so great. I later noticed that he keeps the note folded up in his wallet. :)

  170. I love all things Martha Stewart!
The best gift I ever gave was from the heart. Growing up I always wanted to give my parents and siblings gifts for birthdays and Christmas but since I was only a little girl and had no money I would create original pieces of art. A couple years ago I went home for Christmas break after being away at college for the second year. One afternoon I found that my father had kept many of mine and my younger siblings drawings and finger paintings that we had given him through out the years in a bottom drawer of his desk in his office. I cried as I pulled out drawing after drawing intermingled with photos of us growing up and I realized that these thoughtful gifts from his children meant more to him than anything money could purchase.

  171. After I got married in September of 2001, my mom took my bouquet, preserved it for me, and had it framed in a beautiful shadow box. I actually forgot about my bouquet and was so surprised when I opened up my present from mom. She and I both started crying. My mom passed away this year, but it comforts me to look at my bouquet and think of how much she loved me. In the honor of my mom’s sweet spirit, please don’t give the magazines to me. I just like talking about her ang paying honor to her. Merry Christmas everyone. If you still have a mom, treasure all moments with her.

  177. After 2 years of trying for baby #2, my husband & I were about to start the infertility testing process, which he was dreading so much, I found out that I was pregnant. I had one of my friends call my husband’s doctor and cancel his appointment that was the week before Christmas. I boxed the pregnancy test and gave it to him on Christmas. I will never forget the joy on his face when he opened it. Now 4 years later, our daughter has her daddy’s heart.

  179. The best gift I have ever given and received was last Christmas. We took our children to my grandmother’s house in Tenn. She made Christmas so special ALWAYS on a very tight budget. My children went to her house for the first time, saw mountains and snow for the first time, and went skiing for the first time. It is a memory we will have forever. Memories are the best gifts…Yes!

  181. My favorite Christmas gift I’ve given was and still is a gift basket of snacks, cleaning supplies, and toys given to the Quantum House in West Palm Beach Florida. A few years ago my husband was in a severe accident and in ICU. The Quantum House allows families, mostly families of children, stay in the House at no cost so you are walking distance from the hospital. Giving back every year is a fantastic feeling!

    Melissa C    Saturday, December 11, 2010
  182. The most fun gift was from Santa to our two kids, our son was about 5 and our daughter was about 9.
While my Mom and were away with the two kids for the whole day, my husband and his brother built and put together a large wooden swing set with all the attachments in our back yard, the funny part was it was pouring rain and cold the entire day and evening. The kids followed a trail of notes to find it in the morning and were very surprised, They both exclaimed “there really is a Santa !”

    Maggie    Saturday, December 11, 2010
  183. I would love these mags, especially the Matthee mead!!! A few years ago, when I was 18, I gave my 14 year old sister a trip, for her AND I, to Disneyland. I was so proud of myself for saving enough money to pay for the entire trip. She loved it and we had such a blast! We love to relive the memories we made on our just-sisters trip. ;)

  186. Trying to decide the best gift is hard because one never really knows how a gift is received.
But the gifts I’ve made are the gifts I’ve most enjoyed giving. The most fun homemade gift was a jar of scented bath salts paired with a bottle of cranberry vodka and a recipe for a cranberry cosmopolitan (all recipes came from Martha). I gave gave these to the moms I know so they could enjoy a relaxing mommy moment.

Thanks so much for the tip about where to Find Matthew Mead’s latest mag.

  202. My French husband is a huge fan of jazz and particularly, bassist Marcus Miller who used to play with Miles Davis, and a few years ago I contacted Miller’s record company and asked if there was anyway they could send me a signed autograph in my husband’s name and he gladly did! At that time, I hadn’t yet moved to Paris so it arrived at his apartment close to his birthday and he was so surprised! It’s still hanging up :)

    Lindsey    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  203. I made a hardcover photo book with all the grandkids in it for my motherinlaw. It’s her favorite coffee table book, and I think she really appreciated me adding EVERYONE in the family instead of just my kids {which alot of other family members tend to do!} She always calls me to tell me she had a good cry flipping through the pages!

kelly tillotson    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  204. Oooo that’s a tough one . . . I think it may be the Tiffany cuff links I gave my husband when he was honored as top salesman in the entire country for his company. He wasn’t expecting a gift and just grinned from ear to ear when I gave them to him. I used money I had saved to buy myself something so that made it even better. Plus he said they will always have sentimental value. :)

    Rebecca    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  205. A couple of years ago I made blankets for my 2 boys using their old baby clothes. I saved my favorite t-shirts and onesies from their first year, cut them out into squares and sewed them together with snuggly flannel. They love their “baby blankets” – but it turned out to be more of a gift for me, because now I get to keep those precious baby clothes forever! :)

  206. Great give-away!
Last year for Christmas I gave my music-buff husband five “gig” posters of bands we had seen together over the 20 years we’ve known each other. And together we transferred to my parents enough frequent flyer miles for two round-trip tickets anywhere in the US. Not expensive, but meaningful gifts!

amy jupin    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  208. Best gift ever given? It would have to be a box I made up for each of my girlfriends, which included several items that I loved and wanted to share with them. I called it “a few of my favorite things”.

    Stacey    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  209. My favorite gift given is something I give each year, the “Homer” gift. My hubby loves Simpsons and we watched their Christmas special where Marge makes their Christmas so special. My mom used to give my dad a special gift each year that said it was from “Blue”. I don’t know what the significance was, but I’m trying to continue the tradition To Homer From Marge. Even the kids know who it’s for if they pull it from under the tree! This year we don’t have money to get gifts for each other, but I found a coupon to get my husband something he has been wanting, that he had as a kid… his Homer gift. :)

    Kathleen R    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  210. What a great giveaway!

Once, back when the Smashing Pumpkins were big, I waited in line for aaages for Billy Corgan’s autograph, to give to a friend who was a big fan. I loved giving her that, and she was so surprised.

  212. Okay, this may sound a little strange and I do not mean to be selfish but here goes…back about 41 years ago my mom was going to have a baby…in March. Well she was about 3 months early – with me. I only weighed a mere 2 pounds 11 ounces. I was born Dec. 29th and did not come home til February. If God was not watching over me, I might not have been here to be so blessed to have and raise my very own family.

    ann r    Sunday, December 12, 2010
  213. My wonderful sister has cancer and one day I realized she didn’t have a camera. I took my most amazing favorite camera I’ve ever owned and fully charged the battery, packed up all the lenses and had the body cleaned. 222. My most favorite gift I’ve ever given was myself! {i know, sounds crazy} I lived in NYC & it was a horrible travel year. Weather was causing crazy delays & cancellations. My flight home for Christmas was canceled & my family & I were trying so hard to come to terms w/ the fact that I wasn’t going to make it home in time. My family thought I went home to my apt in the city but instead I stayed at the airport for 2 days even though the airlines said it was hopeless to get on a flight. Well, Christmas Eve morning I got on a flight because someone missed their flight. {sad for them but a miracle for me}. I called my sister to secretly come get me at the airport. I wasn’t able to get home until late on Christmas Eve and my parents FLIPPED OUT! I loved it & it truly was the BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!

Nikki Snyder    Monday, December 13, 2010
  223. I love to take photographs, and every family event I end up with great images of my family and all my nieces and nephews which all just stay on my computer. Last year for Christmas, I decided to make cds for every family, all my siblings and cousins, of all the pictures that have been accumulating, going back five years. It ended up being a lot of work to organize and sort through all those images, but I’m so glad that I was able to share all those memories with everyone.

    April T.    Monday, December 13, 2010
  224. I LOVE Martha’s magazines! I’d be really thrilled to win!
Best gift I gave…. I gave a very long pole saw to my Dad. He was getting up in years and was climbing onto the house roof to trim tree limbs. Not a good idea!

Denise Bryant    Monday, December 13, 2010
  225. I never knew I was crafty until, at age 14, a friend’s mom took me to an arts and crafts fair. I saw what everyone had made and thought, “I could do this!” My friend’s mom took me to a craft store and I bought all the materials I needed to make the world’s lamest fabric flowers on wire stems glued to wooden spool bases. I gave them for Christmas gifts to everyone I knew — both my mom and my best friend’s mom still have theirs! And they were pretty awful! But I was so proud of what I made, and to this day, I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about a gift I’ve given. Plus, I’ve been making art and crafts ever since. :)

    Jenni    Monday, December 13, 2010
  226. The best gift I have ever given was my credit cards wrapped up to my husband. Meaning I would stop using them. Please pick me. I love Martha (only wish she did her kids mag still) and love your site too!

Julie Newcomer    Monday, December 13, 2010
  229. My most wonderful gift was when my now husband presented me with the most stunning engagement ring. Every girl dreams of having her perfect man and after five years of being “just friends” I finally saw in my husband what he wanted me to see all those years: He’s the one! Now we’re happily married and just celebrated our 1.5 year anniversary!

Anastasia Marie    Monday, December 13, 2010
  230. I gave my Papa a scrapbook of his entire career in the Marine Corps. He was speechless, which was a first. He had no idea I was creating these albums, the perfect surprise. :D

cindy barriga    Monday, December 13, 2010
  231. The best gift I have given thus far was a custom mountain bike to my husband. He is an accountant and as such very disciplined in his spending. It was the one gift he wanted desperately and the one purchase he couldn’t justify, as he had a nice bike in the garage. Christmas morning came and after all the gifts had been opened one box remained under the tree; the front fork of his bike. I have never seen him so surprised in our 10 years of marriage. The best part was that he got to build the bike from the wheels up and thoroughly enjoyed the entire process.

    Aleisha    Tuesday, December 14, 2010

    Creative2xmom    Tuesday, December 14, 2010
  234. The best gift I ever gave is a bit hard to describe but – it was a “caricature” of my in-laws done in copper wire. My mother in law always drew caricatures of her and my father in law when the kids were little and could not yet read (as a “signature” so they would know who the card was from). This became a constant signature of theirs on many cards to follow. I recreated her caricature in copper wire and framed it. They loved it and it’s still hanging in their den after 10 or more years. Sorry for the long explanation!

Dawn Newsome    Wednesday, December 15, 2010
