You know those old maps hanging out in the back pocket of your car seat? There are lots of ways to put them to good use at our World Traveler First Birthday Party.
FIVE WAYS TO CREATE MAP PARTY DECORATIONS: Use instead of gift wrap, cut into pennants and make a bunting, make map party hats, cut strips to wrap around water bottles, or use as envelopes.
Baby’s first birthday is a celebration of the start of a new life’s voyage. As parents we wonder many times about the things our children will do and the places they’ll go. A world traveler theme is perfect for a first birthday: maps, vintage luggage and a beautiful, ruffly birthday cake.
This celebration has first birthday ideas for girls, but this party theme is one that can easily be adapted for a boy too. In fact, we’ve included both boy and girl versions of our freebie high-chair banner for you!
To make the “She’s One” (or “He’s One”) sign download and print our template, cut out the circle and glue onto a larger circle cut from decorative scrapbook paper. Hang with fishing line so it’s floating, just out of reach, above the birthday boy or girl’s head. Both of these party printables are setup for 11×17 paper. Get a personalized cake topper and cupcake flags.
I don’t know if I’d take this cake camping–I like regular s’mores too much for that. But I would definitely serve it at a Camping Party. It’s a s’mores cake!
You will need: a 5″ double layer cake already baked and cooled, white buttercream frosting, several unbroken graham crackers, chocolate frosting (the pre-made kind in a plastic container from the grocery store works great, we used Pillsbury Fudge Icing)
Place a small bit of frosting onto your plate or cake stand to keep the graham crackers in place. Add a square layer of graham crackers onto the frosting. Gently place the first layer of cake on top of the graham crackers. Frost a thick layer of frosting onto the first layer then add the second layer of cake on top of that one. Frost the outside of the cake. If you need some help, you can watch our video on how to frost a cake. If you are feeling brave, you can frost the cake first and then slide it onto the graham crackers. Your choice! Once the cake is frosted with the white buttercream frosting and added to the bottom layer of graham crackers, soften the chocolate icing in the microwave for a few seconds. Frost it carefully onto the cake to look like the melted chocolate in a s’more. Then add more graham crackers to the top.
There is still time left this summer to go camping. If you’re planning a camping birthday party or just a fun get together, you’ll love these free printable camping invites. They are easier to make than they look (extra instructions are listed on the printable itself). Click on the picture below to download the invitation. While our collection of pretty metal sign holders comes in handy when we’ve got lots of things to label, some party setups lend themselves to a few larger dessert table signs. That’s where a stash of 4×6 photo frames comes in handy. Look for frames that have simple, clean lines that won’t distract from the printed message on the sign.
It’s not hard to appreciate the nice curves of the well-designed Tolsby photo frame from IKEA. We love just about everything about it, including the 99-cent price tag! I’m not even sure how many of these I own, at least two dozen. Some have been spray painted to coordinate with a party theme. Plus since this frame is double-sided, I’ve used it several times as an easy cake topper.
