Watercolor is a definite favorite when crafting during the Spring and Summer. The color possibilities are endless and no skill is required — that’s our kind of project. This watercolor invitation diy is so easy to do, but even more fun to receive! If you are having any kind of gathering this month, skip the store-bought invites and paint your own.
You will need: assorted watercolor paints, paintbrush, paper, triangular-paper punch, letter stamps, ink pad
Directions: Cover each sheet of paper with your choice of watercolor and let dry. Feel free to mix colors. Make a sheet of warm colors and a sheet of cool colors if you like.
Using your paper punch, punch out small pieces of paper in different sections of the painted areas. A triangular-shaped paper punch makes the invite look like a mini-bunting. A giant circle punch could be super fun as well.
Take your stamps and stamp the letters to the word “party” using one stamp at a time. If you want to put more information, cut out more shapes. Write the small details like when, where, and who on the other pieces of confetti.
Stuff the pieces of confetti in an envelope and send them on their merry way. Your friends will be thrilled to receive this colorful mail!
Make a playful gumball garland for birthday parties and other (kid-friendly) occasions. Kids will love turning this into a party game, as they attempt to eat the gumballs right off of the garland string. Or you can keep the garlands intact until the party is over and eat them later.
You will need: medium-sized gumballs (about 1 inch), colorful string, a large needle (I used a knitting needle), tape, scissors, something to poke holes into the gumballs (I used an awl)
Directions: Separate gumballs by color in different bowls. Begin poking holes all the way through each gumball, using an awl or other sharp tool. You’ll want to take your time and be gentle when poking the holes, so that the gumballs don’t crack or break. Set aside. The desired length of your garland will determine how many gumballs you need to complete this project. Next, wrap a small piece of tape around the edge of the string to keep the threads together and compact, so you can thread your needle. Once you have the string through the eye of the needle, cut off the bit of tape on the end of the string. Begin threading the string through the pre-holed gumballs until you reach the desired length. Knot the ends, so the gumballs don’t slide off the string, and your gumball garland is ready to hang!
Dressing up a plain cake is a snap, with this fast and easy DIY that will work for almost any occasion. Using graphic wallpaper samples, which can be purchased online for a few dollars (or free of charge in some cases), you can create charming wallpaper cake toppers in a matter of minutes.
You will need: scissors, wallpaper samples (I used this one, designed by Emily Isabella), lollipop sticks, non-toxic craft glue, pen or pencil
Directions: Select a wallpaper sample that has a bold print that can be cut easily to make a graphic statement on your cake. Using a pen or pencil, trace the shapes you wish to cut out, or simply start cutting without tracing first (whichever works best for you). Cut out the most interesting shapes to use as cake toppers. Run a small bead of glue over the top one to two inches of your lollipop stick, depending on how large the cut out shape is that you’ll be attaching. Note: Stop the bead of glue about 1/4 inch from the bottom of where your wallpaper shape will attach, to insure that no glue comes in contact with the cake, even after the glue is dry. This only applies to shapes that will actually be touching the icing when you poke them in. Adhere each shape to a lollipop stick. Wait for the glue to completely dry. Poke each lollipop stick into the cake at varying levels to create a scene atop your cake and enjoy!
I was asked a few months ago to create some wedding ideas for a Salt Lake Bride and Groom feature in their gorgeous magazine. Weddings aren’t usually my thing, but I couldn’t say no to this fun project. I came up with a few table number suggestions to share with their readers. I think these ideas can be incorporated into lots of different parties, especially if you’re doing a special number themed birthday (like a first birthday or sweet sixteen) or an anniversary. Enjoy!
Here are the table number ideas in a nutshell:
1. Incorporate a table number–or special birthday number–into the floral arrangements. For this picture I attached a simple house number (find them at Lowe’s or Home Depot) to a tall twig. Megan Dunford from Persimmon Floral created this beautiful arrangement.
2. Fill glass or apothecary jars with candies to coordinate with the party colors. I attached a vinyl number to the jar and included a small metal scoop so guests would feel welcome to help themselves.
3. Use double sided frames to show off pictures of the bride + groom or the birthday kid. I think photographs are great conversation starters and kids always love to see pictures of themselves. You can use the other side to show off more pictures, as a table number or to highlight the birthday child’s age.
4. Display a table number (or the birthday child’s name, etc.) in a simple place card holder and add a container full of bubbles or other party favors that guests can have fun with or take home.
These versatile balloon birthday invitations are colorful and cute. Just print the adorable invites onto matte white cardstock or have your local printer print them. Fill out and use a #10 envelope.
